Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does my Tapo stream keep dropping?

Ensure the camera has strong Wi-Fi reception. High-resolution streams (stream1) can suffer packet loss on weak 2.4GHz bands. Try switching to stream2 or improving your network coverage.

Q: Do battery-powered Tapo cameras support RTSP?

Battery-powered models like the C420 require a base station (H200). While they can stream RTSP, doing so continuously will drain the battery within days. RTSP is best suited for plugged-in models.

Tested Models

The following models have been verified to support standard local RTSP streams natively:

Tapo C100Tapo C200 (Pan/Tilt)Tapo C310 (Outdoor)Tapo C500 (PTZ)Tapo C225 (AI)Tapo C320WSTapo C420 (Battery Cams via Hub)

Quick Optimization Tips

  • Always assign a DHCP reservation (static IP) to your Tapo camera in your router settings to prevent the IP from shifting.
  • RTSP streaming works locally and does not require an active cloud subscription or outbound internet access.
  • Use stream1 for maximum 1080p/2K resolution. Use stream2 (sub-stream) for multi-grid low-bandwidth previews.
